They're absolutely intentional, but I might add an option flag to turn them off.
It’s based on GNOME’s gdk-pixbuf library, also used by Eye of GNOME, GPicView, PCMan File Manager, Nemo File Manager, and other applications. The second warning just says, that it cannot open a file you have given on the command line. Xviewer is the default image viewer of Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition. Its not finished yet, but I think its already pretty useful.
